This weekend at Denver Botanic Gardens, you can see — and odor — one thing fascinatingly scarce: the blooming of a corpse flower named Lil Stinker.
The Amorphophallus titanum, recognised colloquially as a corpse flower, is a gigantic tropical plant that, when briefly in bloom, emits an unbelievable odor that typically attracts extensive lines from curious plant fans.
“This odor is a mechanism for the plant to draw in pollinators, like carrion beetles and flies, from as far as a mile absent,” Denver Botanic Gardens claimed on its web-site, noting that a corpse flower could bloom as often as every 2-3 decades. The gardens are home to two this sort of bouquets: Stinker and its mini edition Lil Stinker, at this time uncovered in the Tropical Conservatory by means of the weekend.
When Lil Stinker opens up, the clock is ticking — you’ve only acquired 24-36 hrs to appreciate the s̶m̶e̶l̶l̶ spectacle. (Up to date at 2:50 p.m. Friday, June 17: Lil Stinker has commenced to shut up before than envisioned, the Botanic Gardens posted on social media, but we can confirm she is breathtaking in individual and does in truth smell quite rank if you stick your nose close.)
Denver Botanic Gardens gave a visible preview of Lil Stinker’s big instant on social media:
Lil’ Stinker Bloom Warn! You can see (and it’s possible smell) a corpse flower in the Tropical Conservatory. Lil’ Stinker last bloomed in 2016. We foresee the flower remaining open for 24-36 hrs.
