Cheektowaga breaks ground on new veterans park, memorial garden during Memorial Day ceremony | Local News

Just after some debate above the identify, veterans, community users and local reps gathered on Memorial Day to break ground at the Veterans Park at Nob Hill and Pfc. Neil E. Bateman Veterans Memorial Yard in the town of Cheektowaga. 

Close to two dozen men and women attended the ceremony on the warm, sunny afternoon, not only to mark the groundbreaking of the new park and garden, but to don’t forget and honor the lives dropped in fight.

The Rev. Rick Maisano led people gathered in prayer, and regional veterans sang, examine poetry, done a rifle salute and performed “Taps.”

Town councilmembers voted past May possibly to title the park Veterans Park at Nob Hill and incorporate a memorial back garden inside the park named soon after Neil Bateman, a Cheektowaga native who was 20 yrs outdated when he was killed in combat on May well 15, 1967, whilst serving in the Vietnam War.

Neil’s brother, Glenn Bateman, and other supporters desired the complete park to be named after Neil, but councilmembers chose Veterans Park as a way to honor all local veterans. 

Construction of the park and back garden will get started this summertime at the present Nob Hill Park, off Cleveland Travel. The centerpiece of the park will be a 6-foot extensive, 3-foot tall memorial marker. Stone benches, a silver star engraving and a flag pole will be bundled. 

The Neil Bateman memorial backyard garden will surround the park and will be loaded with bouquets and shrubbery.

Neil graduated from Maryvale Higher School in 1966, his brother, Glenn Bateman, mentioned. Bateman explained his older brother as the “huge guy on campus” when he was a scholar at Maryvale. Neil was a well-known athlete who performed football and was on the wrestling crew. 

Following graduation, Neil joined the U.S. Army and grew to become a paratrooper. On the day he died, he and his fellow soldiers have been ambushed. Neil “billed the enemy” so the other soldiers had time to evacuate wounded troops and could choose protect, Bateman stated. 

Neil was awarded the Bronze Star, the Silver Star and the Purple Heart for his heroic steps that working day.
